Phase 3 Food Guide: What to Reintroduce (and When) to Lock In Your Results
Why Phase 3 Stabilization Matters
Congratulations on completing the Fat Burn phase. Phase 3 marks the beginning of Stabilization, when you'll start increasing calories and reintroducing more foods while continuing to follow the BioSource protocol. The structure is different from Phase 2, but this phase still has specific guidelines to follow.
The transition can feel unfamiliar after the more restrictive structure of Phase 2. Phase 3 gives you guidelines for increasing calories, reintroducing foods, monitoring your Weight Reference Point (WRP), and responding when your weight moves outside the protocol's stabilization window.
Phase 3 begins on Day 22, or Day 42 for the extended round. Your weight at the beginning of this phase becomes your Weight Reference Point (WRP). During Stabilization, the BioSource protocol calls for staying within 2 pounds of your WRP while gradually increasing calories and expanding your food choices.
The Core Guidelines for Phase 3
Before looking at which foods you can add, start with the core Phase 3 guidelines.
- Daily weigh-ins. Weigh yourself at the beginning of Phase 3 to establish your WRP, then continue monitoring your weight daily. Keeping a consistent record makes it easier to see when your weight moves outside the protocol's 2-pound stabilization window.
- The 2-pound rule. If your weight reaches 2.1 pounds or more above your WRP, the BioSource protocol calls for a Reset Day that same day. Phase 3 includes three Reset Day options: a Steak Day, Raw Vegetable Day, or Apple Day. Follow the complete BioSource instructions for whichever Reset Day you choose.
- Continue avoiding added sugar and certain starches. Added sugar is still excluded during Phase 3. Starchy vegetables such as potatoes, root vegetables, and corn also remain outside the plan, along with starchy beans such as black beans, pinto beans, and chickpeas. Your carbohydrates during this phase primarily come from approved vegetables and fruits.
Foods You Can Add When Phase 3 Begins
- Healthy fats and oils. Phase 3 brings healthy fats and oils back into your meals. BioSource lists options such as coconut oil, avocado, grass-fed butter, olive oil, raw nuts, salmon, grass-fed beef, buffalo, and eggs.
- More protein choices. All proteins are approved during Phase 3. If you choose bacon, the BioSource protocol recommends an organic option without added sugar or nitrates.
- Nuts and seeds, with caution. Choose raw nuts in a single serving of one variety. Nut butters are considered cautionary because they're easy to overeat, and peanuts are not recommended during Phase 3 but may be eaten with caution.
- Non-starchy vegetables. Continue choosing non-starchy vegetables during Phase 3. Potatoes, root vegetables, and corn remain outside the Stabilize food list for now.
- Whole fruit. Choose natural, whole pieces of fruit during Phase 3. Canned fruit, dried fruit, and fruit with added sugar remain outside the plan. Melons, bananas, grapes, and mangoes are considered cautionary foods, so introduce them thoughtfully rather than treating them as unrestricted choices.
- Sweeteners. Added sugar is still excluded during Phase 3, but the protocol allows you to introduce alternatives such as xylitol or monk fruit.
Phase 3 Quick Reference
Add during Phase 3: Healthy fats and oils, approved proteins, non-starchy vegetables, whole fruits, and approved sweeteners such as xylitol or monk fruit.
Use caution: Melons, bananas, grapes, mangoes, nuts and seeds, nut butters, peanuts, and dairy.
Wait one week: Dairy. After the first week, aged cheese over one year may be introduced according to the Phase 3 guidelines.
Still excluded: Added sugar, potatoes, root vegetables, corn, black beans, pinto beans, chickpeas, canned fruit, dried fruit, and fruit with added sugar.
When to Reintroduce Dairy
Dairy is considered cautionary during Phase 3 and should not be eaten during the first week. This includes milk, yogurt, cheese, cream, and other dairy products.
After the first week, the Phase 3 protocol allows you to introduce aged cheese that has been aged longer than one year. Avoid cheese singles and pre-shredded cheese during this phase, and choose a block or freshly sliced cheese instead.
How to Increase Calories During Phase 3
Phase 3 transitions you away from the lower calorie intake used during the Fat Burn phase. Instead of continuing your Phase 2 calorie target, BioSource uses an individualized Stabilize calorie target based on your Basal Metabolic Rate (BMR), activity level, and other factors.
Use BioSource's BMR & Stabilize Calorie Target Calculator to determine your new target. During the first few days, gradually increase your intake by about 200 calories each day until you reach that target. If your weight continues to decrease, the protocol instructs you to continue increasing calories until your weight stabilizes.
BioSource recommends dividing your macronutrients roughly into thirds during Phase 3: about one-third fats, one-third protein, and one-third carbohydrates, with carbohydrates coming primarily from vegetables and fruit. Use your individualized calorie target and the Phase 3 food list to build meals within that framework.
How to Follow the 2-Pound Rule
If your daily weigh-in reaches 2.1 pounds or more above your WRP, the Phase 3 protocol calls for completing a Reset Day that same day. For example, if your WRP is 200 pounds, a weight of 202.1 pounds or higher reaches the Reset Day threshold.
If you reach the 2.1-pound threshold, follow the protocol's Reset Day guidance that day rather than postponing it.
BioSource provides three Reset Day options during Phase 3: a Steak Day, Raw Vegetable Day, or Apple Day. Follow the complete instructions for your chosen Reset Day rather than adding extra restriction or creating your own version.
Where Razburn Fits Into Phase 3
BioSource recommends Razburn during Phase 3 for additional metabolism and immune support as you transition back to a higher calorie intake. It's intended to complement the Phase 3 food and tracking guidelines, not replace them.
What to Do If You Get Off Track
Phase 3 won't always go perfectly. You may eat something outside the current food list, miss a tracking day, or realize that a portion was larger than you intended. One imperfect day doesn't mean you've failed the protocol.
Return to the Phase 3 guidelines at your next opportunity. Review the current food list, resume your usual tracking, and follow the protocol's Reset Day instructions if your weight reaches the 2.1-pound threshold. Avoid adding extra restriction beyond what the protocol recommends.
The goal is consistency, not perfection. Use the Phase 3 structure to help you return to your routine instead of treating one deviation as a reason to abandon the plan.
Phase 3 Bridges Fat Burn and Maintenance
Phase 3 is the transition between the Fat Burn phase and longer-term maintenance. Your calorie intake and food choices expand, but the phase still provides structure through your Stabilize calorie target, food-reintroduction guidelines, daily weight tracking, and WRP monitoring.
Focus on gradually reaching your Stabilize calorie target, following the Phase 3 food list, monitoring your WRP, and using the protocol's Reset Day guidance when needed. These steps give you a clear structure as you move toward the next phase of the program.
